6 SEO Tricks That Will Stop Working in 2025 (and What to Do Instead)

Why don’t old SEO techniques work anymore in 2025?

We’re already in the second half of 2025, and we still see plenty of people sticking with SEO strategies that simply don’t work anymore.

Before you keep putting time and resources into techniques Google no longer rewards, it pays to follow Google’s algorithm changes closely and see exactly which techniques have stopped working. I want to save you some time… and share a few things we’ve stopped doing here at DigiAssets because they just don’t work anymore. You should stop doing them too, starting now.

Auto-cloning service pages and swapping the keyword

What we had until now: Creating 50 pages like “carpet cleaning in Tel Aviv”, “carpet cleaning in Givatayim”, “carpet cleaning in Ramat Gan”. The exact same content, with only the city name changed.

Why it doesn’t work anymore: Google’s algorithm has gotten much smarter at spotting repetitive content. The system recognizes that pages with 95% identical content don’t provide real value to users.

What to do instead: Every location or service page should include specific information relevant to that area or service. What makes the service unique in this area? Which problems are common there specifically? What hours work best for local residents? Build pages for customers with content that’s genuinely tailored.

Too much focus on rankings, too little focus on AI Overviews

What we had until now: Measuring success only by position in the search results: position 1, position 2, position 3.

Why it doesn’t work anymore: The SERP looks completely different today. 64% of searches show an AI Overview at the top of the page, which has a dramatic impact on clicks to regular websites.

What works today: The metrics that matter now are impressions, click-through rate (CTR), time on site and on-page user behavior. A site ranking in position 5 according to Search Console that gets more clicks than position 1: that’s exactly what we’re after.

Neglecting brand assets and the “just promote the website” strategy

What we’ve seen until now: Investing only in the website as the brand’s single asset, with no presence on social networks or other platforms.

Why it doesn’t work anymore: Google gives more and more weight to strong brand signals. Sites without strong support from brand assets simply can’t compete with the big brands.

What works today: Building an ecosystem of assets: an active YouTube channel, a professional Facebook page, LinkedIn with quality content, and real traffic flowing from all of these assets to the website. I know this strategy takes a lot of investment, but the results speak for themselves.

Building links from directories, forums and profile sites of all kinds

What we’ve seen until now: Buying or building links from directory sites, general forums and profiles on hundreds of sites unrelated to the niche.

Why it doesn’t work anymore: The algorithm easily identifies links from sites with a huge ratio of outbound links. The value of these sites drops to zero, and in extreme cases they actually do harm.

What works today: Quality links from sites relevant to your niche, earned through real value. One quality article that earns a natural link from a professional blog is worth more than 100 generic links.

Hollow category pages with no content

What we’ve seen, and still see today: Category pages with nothing but a list of products or services, without any explanation, description or added value for the user.

Why it doesn’t work anymore: Google prefers pages that answer the user’s full search intent. A hollow category page with only a list of products doesn’t help users figure out what’s right for them.

What works today: Category pages with rich content: a well-structured main heading, a short intro paragraph describing the category, even a YouTube video, a filter bar, FAQs, tips and additional information below the products, including internal links to products or subcategories.

Turn your category page into a high-quality content page in its own right, not just a catalog.

AI content without human editing

What we had until now: Copying content straight from ChatGPT or other AI tools onto the site, without any editing or added human value.

Why it doesn’t work anymore: Google keeps improving its ability to detect automatically generated content. This content doesn’t just rank poorly. It hurts the credibility of the entire site.

What works today: Using AI as a starting point, but with substantial human editing. Add personal insights, real-world examples, professional experience and a unique angle. That’s how content becomes authentic and useful.

What are the takeaways? And where are search engines heading?

The big shift in SEO in 2025 is the move away from specific techniques or tricks that used to work, toward the whole substance of your brand. Instead of looking for more ways to manipulate or “mass-produce content”, this year every brand must know how to create real value for its users.

At DigiAssets, we help businesses make this shift in a smart, precise way. Instead of sticking with outdated methodologies, we build SEO strategies aligned with what the algorithm actually wants to see.
