The Story That Made IKEA the Queen of Global SEO

How IKEA Turned the Keyword “My Boyfriend Snores” into the Most Brilliant SEO Campaign Ever

November 2016, Stockholm. 2:30 a.m.

Magnus Jakobsson sat in the offices of ad agency Åkestam Holst, drinking coffee and thinking about how to save IKEA Sweden. Sales had stalled, customers complained about “boring furniture”, and competitors had started grabbing market share. Instead of planning a regular ad campaign, Magnus decided to research what Swedes actually search for on Google.

The results surprised him:

“My boyfriend snores”: 45,000 searches a month

“He doesn’t text me back”: 38,000 searches

“She doesn’t want to cuddle”: 29,000 searches

In that moment he realized: people don’t search for products. They search for solutions to emotional pain.

And that’s how the crazy idea was born

What if IKEA renamed its products to match the problems people search for in the middle of the night?

A double bed became the “My boyfriend snores” bed. A USB charger was named “He doesn’t text me back”
A frying pan was called “How to stay married”

Convincing IKEA wasn’t easy. After 100 meetings and endless arguments, the CEO of IKEA Sweden said: “This is the craziest idea I’ve ever heard… but it’s exactly what we need.”

Someone scrolling through GSC

The results were stunning

Within two weeks:

1.7 million Swedes saw the campaign (20% of the population)

Click-through rate jumped to 16.13%, 95 times the average

Product sales rose 25%

Even though the campaign ran only in Swedish, it earned 175 million impressions in global media. Everyone could relate to the “my boyfriend snores” problem, even without knowing a word of Swedish.

What does this teach us about smart SEO?

Magnus didn’t discover a marketing trick. He discovered a deep truth about smart SEO.

Instead of competing for “furniture” against millions of brands, IKEA found keywords nobody had thought of. Words that describe real pain points people are trying to solve. The success didn’t come from big budgets or sophisticated technology. It happened because someone listened to what people search for when they’re alone with their phone at 3 a.m.

IKEA doesn’t just sell furniture. It has become part of our culture.

This is exactly the kind of thinking that should drive organic SEO, and marketing in general.

Like Magnus, we believe strong SEO starts with understanding what really bothers your customers. Instead of chasing the keywords everyone wants, we look for hidden opportunities: the pain points your customers are trying to solve that nobody is addressing. This approach doesn’t just bring traffic. It builds a real connection between your brand and your customers.
